Apps I use to study German from zero (simple, speaking-first, no overwhelm)

A useful app stack assigns one job to each tool. It does not ask one product to teach every skill, and it does not create four competing streaks.

If structure is the bottleneck: DW Learn German

DW Learn German is the free structured course and media in this stack. Its useful role is level-based German courses with audio, video, vocabulary, and grammar.

Limit: A broad free platform still needs a small chosen path and regular output.

Use it until you can explain the current lesson's sentence pattern in plain language.

If listening is the bottleneck: Easy German

Easy German is the natural listening in this stack. Its useful role is street interviews, learner videos, podcasts, and subtitles.

Limit: It is input rather than a complete grammar sequence, and speakers vary.

Replay one short dialogue, shadow a checked line, and notice which sounds or endings disappear at normal speed.

If lookup or input is the bottleneck: dict.cc German-English

dict.cc German-English is the fast reference in this stack. Its useful role is dictionary lookup with forms, phrases, and audio for many entries.

Limit: Check context carefully; isolated translations do not choose the right case or register.

Open it only for a real question from your current course or listening. A tool earns its place by removing a measured obstacle.

The output handoff: ChickyTutor

ChickyTutor for German has one job here: make you retrieve language already checked in the other tools. It can run a private exchange, ask an unprepared follow-up, and make you repeat one repaired answer.

Run a five-minute German appointment roleplay using Sie. Correct one verb-position or case issue, make me repeat it, then change the date.

ChickyTutor is not the curriculum or an authority on regional German, pronunciation, case choice, or formal address. Compare pronunciation with native audio and take disputed or high-stakes corrections to a qualified teacher or proficient speaker.

A small weekly test

Use the first tool on four days, the second on two or three, and the third only when its specific job appears. End three sessions with the output prompt. At the end of the week, remove any tool that produced notifications but no sentence you could understand or say.

The stack is working when you can reuse a checked phrase after the situation changes. Adding another app is not progress unless it fixes a gap the current three cannot cover.
