B1 to B2 Dutch speaking for clearer professional communication

Moving from B1 to B2 Dutch is not a promise to sound native or eliminate every pause. The practical change is being able to handle a wider range of work tasks: explain a problem in detail, support an opinion, clarify ambiguity, respond to an alternative, and adjust your register.

The Taalunie's ERK Nederlands task and performance bank contains assessed examples for speaking and interaction at B1 and B2. It also warns that one performance cannot determine a person's overall level. Use its tasks as reference points, not as a self-issued certificate.

Replace “sounding professional” with observable tasks

Choose one workplace task each week:

• give a concise project update;
• explain a delay and propose a response;
• disagree without closing the discussion;
• summarize a decision and next steps;
• ask for clarification in a meeting.

Record a first attempt without a script. Note whether the listener could identify the issue, reason, proposal, and requested action.

Build a clear answer shape

For an update, use four moves:

1. status: Op dit moment zijn we bezig met…
2. issue: Het belangrijkste knelpunt is…
3. consequence: Daardoor bestaat het risico dat…
4. proposal: Mijn voorstel is om…

Change the project and consequence while keeping the discourse shape. B2 development requires flexibility; memorizing one polished status update does not demonstrate it.

Add nuance and interaction

Practise phrases that keep a professional exchange open:

• Als ik je goed begrijp, bedoel je dat…
• Daar ben ik het gedeeltelijk mee eens, maar…
• Kun je toelichten wat je met … bedoelt?
• Zullen we de voor- en nadelen kort op een rij zetten?

Ask a partner to question one assumption. Respond to the question rather than returning immediately to your prepared text.

Review language that affected clarity
