7 Arabic Learning Apps: Choose MSA or a Dialect First
Duolingo offers Arabic, but Arabic learners must choose MSA, a dialect, or both. Compare seven apps and courses by variety, audio, script, structure, and speaking use.
7 Arabic Learning Apps: Choose MSA or a Dialect First
Duolingo did offer Arabic in its official course selector on August 8, 2026. Course catalogues change, so recheck the selector for a later decision.
Before choosing an app, decide what “Arabic” means for your goal. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) is used widely in formal writing, news, and education. Daily conversation differs by region. A learner visiting Cairo, joining a family in Beirut, and reading formal texts needs three different study plans.
Choose your target before your subscription
- Reading and formal media: start with MSA.
- Conversation in one country: choose that regional variety and learn how it relates to MSA.
- Long-term broad use: build an MSA base, then add one dialect deliberately.
1. Duolingo
Duolingo Arabic gives beginners short practice with the writing system, vocabulary, and sentence exercises. It works well as a daily supplement for an MSA-oriented plan.
It does not settle which spoken variety you should use with people in a particular region. Add native audio and a dialect-specific resource if conversation is your goal.
2. Mango Languages
Mango Languages lists multiple Arabic offerings, including MSA and regional courses. Its dialogue-led lessons, pronunciation comparison, and cultural notes make it useful when you have chosen a variety.
Course depth differs across varieties. Check the current catalogue and sample the exact Arabic course you want. Library, school, or employer access may remove the subscription cost.
3. Pimsleur
Pimsleur Arabic offers separate Arabic course choices and audio lessons that require spoken responses. It suits learners who want guided listening and recall without looking at a screen.
Confirm the exact variety and number of levels before buying. You will also need dedicated reading and writing study if literacy matters.
4. ArabicPod101
ArabicPod101 provides audio and video lessons, dialogue breakdowns, vocabulary tools, and learning pathways. It can supply a large amount of listening material at different levels.
Do not mix regional material casually. Label every lesson MSA, Egyptian, Levantine, or another stated variety in your notes, and check which tools sit behind each paid plan.
5. AlifBee
AlifBee is built specifically for Arabic and covers reading, writing, listening, and speaking through sequenced levels. It is a useful candidate for learners who want one Arabic-focused path rather than a general-language app.
Its main path is MSA, so it will not by itself prepare you for every local conversation. Test the placement and sample lessons before committing.
6. Kaleela
Kaleela teaches Arabic through courses that include MSA and named dialects. That explicit variety choice is valuable for learners with a destination or family community in mind.
Availability and course depth can vary by platform and variety. Check the current app listing, lesson sample, and script support for your exact target.
7. ChickyTutor
ChickyTutor Arabic practice can turn a lesson into a private roleplay, but you must state the variety you want. Its useful role is retrieval: answering a hotel clerk, relative, or colleague with the phrases you just studied.
It is not a source of record for dialect boundaries, formal register, spelling, or pronunciation. Ask it to avoid mixing varieties, then verify corrections with a teacher or reliable native material.
Use only beginner Modern Standard Arabic for a five-minute hotel check-in. Begin with “أريد أن أحجز غرفة لليلتين.” Ask for my name, dates, and passport. Keep sentences short. At the end, show two clearer replies, but do not introduce dialect words.
A sensible first month
Choose one variety in writing. Use AlifBee or Duolingo for an MSA base, or Mango, Pimsleur, or Kaleela for a clearly named regional course. Listen to ArabicPod101 material that matches the same choice. Add one short ChickyTutor roleplay each week, and have a proficient speaker review any phrase you plan to use in a sensitive or formal setting.
