Dutch speaking practice: a 10-minute daily routine for busy expats

Ten minutes is enough for one small Dutch speaking loop. It is not enough for a complete curriculum, and it will not produce fluency on a fixed schedule. Use the routine to prepare language you can test at work, in a shop, with a neighbor, or during an appointment.

Minutes 0-2: hear one local model

Choose a short piece of Dutch with audio and text. NOS Jeugdjournaal provides concise native-facing stories. It is useful authentic input, but it is not sequenced for NT2 learners and may be too fast or regionally narrow for your current goal.

Listen once, check the text, and select one sentence shape relevant to your day.

Minutes 2-5: retrieve and change

Hide the source. Say the pattern with your details, then change one element.

For example:

• Vandaag werk ik thuis omdat er onderhoud is.
• Morgen werk ik op kantoor omdat ik een afspraak heb.

If the word order fails, check it and repeat the complete repaired sentence without reading.

Minutes 5-9: complete a practical exchange

Use a partner or ChickyTutor Dutch for a short scenario:

Run a four-minute Dutch pharmacy roleplay at A2. Ask one question at a time. Make me explain a simple need, answer a follow-up, ask how to use the product, and confirm one instruction. Correct one meaning-changing error per turn. Do not provide my answer before I try.

Change the daily scenario: parcel delivery, GP reception, school pickup, lunch order, building repair, or project update. Do not use practice as a substitute for professional medical, legal, or safety advice.

Minute 9-10: keep one repair

Write down:

• the task;
• one phrase you retrieved;
