French Conversation Practice: 12 Copyable Roleplay Scenarios

These French roleplays give you a task, a useful opening line, and a complication you cannot solve by reciting a fixed dialogue. Copy a prompt into a tutor or practise it with a partner. Keep the scene in French and request corrections after the exchange, not after every sentence.

1. Order breakfast at a cafe

Copyable prompt: Play a server in a busy cafe in Lyon. Speak natural, beginner-friendly French. Ask what I would like, offer two choices, and answer one question about ingredients.

Start with: “Bonjour, je voudrais un café crème et un croissant, s'il vous plaît.”

Twist: There are no croissants left.

2. Correct a hotel reservation

Copyable prompt: Play a hotel receptionist. My booking has the wrong room type. Ask for my name and dates, explain what is available, and help me choose a solution.

Start with: “Bonjour, j'ai une réservation au nom de…”

Twist: The correct room is available only from the second night.

3. Buy a train ticket

Copyable prompt: Play a station ticket agent. Ask for my destination, travel time, class, and whether I need a return ticket. Offer two departures.

Start with: “Je voudrais un billet pour Bordeaux, s'il vous plaît.”

Twist: The fastest train is full.

4. Ask for directions

Copyable prompt: Play a local person. I need to reach the nearest pharmacy. Give one direction at a time, include a landmark, and ask me to repeat what I understood.

Start with: “Excusez-moi, où se trouve la pharmacie la plus proche ?”

Twist: The shortest street is closed.

5. Exchange a purchase

Copyable prompt: Play a shop assistant. I want to exchange a jacket for another size. Ask for the receipt and explain the available options.

Start with: “Je voudrais échanger cette veste contre une autre taille.”

Twist: My size exists only in a different colour.

6. Explain symptoms at a pharmacy

Copyable prompt: Play a pharmacist. Ask what hurts, how long I have felt unwell, and whether I have allergies. Keep the exchange cautious and advise medical care where appropriate.

Start with: “J'ai mal à la gorge depuis deux jours.”

Twist: I cannot take one common medicine.

7. Make plans with a friend

Copyable prompt: Play a French-speaking friend. Suggest two activities for Saturday, disagree with my first choice for a practical reason, and agree on a time and place.

Start with: “Ça te dit de faire quelque chose samedi ?”

Twist: Heavy rain is expected in the afternoon.

8. Join workplace small talk

Copyable prompt: Play a colleague before a meeting. Ask about my journey to work, current task, and plans for lunch. Keep the tone friendly and natural.

Start with: “Salut, tu as passé un bon week-end ?”

Twist: We receive a message that the meeting has moved.

9. Book a restaurant by phone

Copyable prompt: Play a restaurant host taking a booking. Ask for the date, time, number of guests, name, and one dietary requirement.

Start with: “Bonsoir, je voudrais réserver une table pour quatre personnes.”

Twist: My requested time is unavailable.

10. Report a lost bag

Copyable prompt: Play an employee at a station information desk. Ask me to describe my bag, say where I last saw it, and provide contact details.

Start with: “Je crois que j'ai oublié mon sac dans le train.”

Twist: A similar bag has been found, but one detail is different.

11. Arrange a home repair

Copyable prompt: Play a landlord or property manager. Ask what is broken, whether it is urgent, and when a technician can enter the flat.

Start with: “Il y a une fuite sous l'évier de la cuisine.”

Twist: The first appointment conflicts with my work schedule.

12. Handle an extra dinner guest

Copyable prompt: Play a friend helping me prepare dinner. One extra guest is coming and has a dietary restriction. Help me adjust the menu and divide the shopping.

Start with: “Finalement, une personne de plus vient dîner ce soir.”

Twist: The shops close in thirty minutes.

Use the scenarios instead of reading them

Choose one scene and run it three times. First use the starter. Next express the same idea without looking. On the third round, ask your partner to change a detail such as the date, price, number of people, or available option.
