How to practice speaking French online effectively

Online French speaking practice works when the session makes you respond, clarify, and repair. Watching a French video can prepare you for that work, but it is not itself a conversation.

Use this sequence for an AI session, language exchange, or lesson with a teacher.

Step 1: choose input at the right level

Start with one short, transcript-supported item. TV5MONDE Apprendre organizes video-based exercises by level. RFI Français Facile publishes learner-facing audio, transcripts, and exercises. Both are useful for hearing French in context; neither guarantees that every item matches your accent target or current speaking level.

Listen once without the transcript. Then read and choose three expressions you could use in a conversation. Avoid copying an entire paragraph.

Step 2: write a small speaking brief

Before opening a call, decide:

• the situation;
• your approximate level;
• the three expressions you want to retrieve;
• one kind of feedback you want;
• a five- or ten-minute time limit.

For example: “I am A2. Ask me about a delayed train. Correct only question formation. Do not show me a model answer until I try.”

This prevents a friendly chat from becoming either unstructured small talk or a stream of corrections.

Step 3: speak before reading help

Answer the first question without notes. If you get stuck, use a repair phrase instead of abandoning the turn:

• Comment dit-on… ?
• Vous pouvez répéter plus lentement ?
• Je veux dire que…
• Laissez-moi reformuler.

Ask your partner to wait a few seconds before helping. Retrieval needs space.

Step 4: request bounded feedback

Choose one focus: liaison, a vowel contrast, gender and agreement, question formation, past narration, or register. A teacher can diagnose pronunciation in a way a text system cannot. A language partner can offer natural alternatives, but may not be able to explain the grammar. Agree on the role before the call.

Step 5: close the loop

• one sentence you could say comfortably;
• one repair you needed;

Say the repaired sentence twice, then use it in a new answer. Revisit the same task two or three days later with one changed detail. Do not measure progress by minutes online. Measure whether you can complete more of the task, respond with less delay, and reuse corrections without seeing them.
