Let's look at the first sentence: 'Ik ben hier.' This means 'I am here.'

8. Student
That looks just like English! Is 'ben' the verb for 'am'?
Audio ready
9. Teacher
Yes! 'Ik' is first, and 'ben' is second. Simple.

Now listen to: 'Vandaag ben ik hier.' This means 'Today I am here.'

11. Student
Wait, why did 'ben' and 'ik' swap places?
Audio ready
12. Teacher
In Dutch, if you start with a time like 'vandaag', the verb must still be the second thing you say. So 'ben' stays second, and 'ik' moves to third.

Next we heard: 'Nu ben ik hier.' 'Nu' means 'now'.

14. Student
So because 'nu' is the first piece, 'ben' has to be the second piece?
Audio ready
15. Teacher
Exactly. The verb is like a magnet for that second spot.

Is 'daar' the word for 'there'?

Yes. 'Daar' is first, so 'ben' is second. You're getting it!
