Let's look at the first sentence. Felix said: 'Wo ist der Schlüssel? Ich brauche ihn jetzt.' That means 'Where is the key? I need it now.' Because key is masculine—der Schlüssel—we replace it with ihn as the direct object.

So even though a key is an inanimate object, it becomes 'ihn' because the noun gender is masculine?

That's right! Masculine nouns always take 'ihn' in the accusative case when they receive the action.
