Best Apps to Improve English: Choose the Bottleneck, Not the Brand

“Improve my English” is too broad to choose an app. A learner who cannot follow meetings needs a different tool from someone whose pronunciation is unclear or whose IELTS writing lacks control.

Pick the section that describes the failure you notice in real life.

If listening is the bottleneck

BBC Learning English publishes English-learning audio, video, text, podcasts, and app content from the BBC World Service. Use one series at your level and replay short sections instead of sampling the entire catalogue.

A useful loop is listen, check the transcript, listen again, then give a 30-second summary. If you understand the transcript but not the recording, the issue is probably decoding connected speech rather than vocabulary alone.

If a word never sounds like the dictionary
