Best Apps to Learn Portuguese from Zero: Choose Brazil or Portugal First

Before choosing an app, choose the Portuguese you need. Brazilian and European Portuguese share a language, but everyday vocabulary, pronouns, rhythm, and pronunciation differ enough that mixing beginner audio creates avoidable confusion.

Pick Brazil if your relationships, travel, work, or media are mainly Brazilian. Pick Portugal if you live there, plan to move there, or need a Portuguese exam. You can broaden later.

Route A: Brazilian Portuguese

Falando is a dedicated Brazilian Portuguese course. Its official site describes a structured A1–C2 path with grammar, vocabulary audio, listening exercises, Brazilian cultural context, and a Celpe-Bras practice mode. That regional focus makes it a stronger spine than a generic app whose Portuguese variety is unclear.

Use one lesson, copy two complete phrases, and find those phrases in native Brazilian audio. The app can organise progression; real listening teaches you how words compress and connect.

If you prefer an audio-led start, Pimsleur Brazilian Portuguese uses prompted spoken recall. It is useful for answering aloud early, but a listening course still needs reading, writing, and varied native input around it.

For an official exam goal, use current Celpe-Bras information from INEP. A third-party mock mode can provide extra repetitions; the exam owner is the authority on registration, format, and results.

Route B: European Portuguese

Practice Portuguese teaches Portuguese from Portugal. Its current site and app describe step-by-step lessons, native audio, dialogues with transcripts, learning notes, spaced review, and verb practice. It is designed around European Portuguese rather than adapting a Brazilian course.

European Portuguese listening often feels fast to beginners because unstressed vowels reduce and words link. Spend more time with short dialogue audio than with isolated vocabulary. Listen once, read the transcript, then replay one speaker's line until the rhythm is recognisable.

If you are preparing for CAPLE, use the University of Lisbon CAPLE site for the current exams, centres, dates, and official information. A course can build the required Portuguese, but it does not define the exam.

The shared output layer

A speaking-first week that still covers the language

1. Study four short course sessions.
2. After each, save two phrases as complete sentences.
3. Shadow reliable regional audio for five minutes.

5. On Sunday, record a one-minute retell and note one problem for the next week.

Speaking first should mean producing Portuguese early. It should not mean skipping the listening, regional input, grammar, and reading that make speech accurate enough to understand.
