Intermediate Dutch Resources: Speaking, Listening, Reading and More

Find intermediate Dutch resources for conversation, podcasts, reading, grammar and vocabulary, with ChickyTutor first and a practical weekly routine.

You can explain what you did yesterday in Dutch, but a quick follow-up still makes you pause. At this stage, more beginner lessons may feel comfortable without helping you handle a conversation that changes direction.

Choose resources that make you do something with what you understand: retell a podcast, explain a newspaper story, or negotiate a different appointment. Here is a manageable selection for that work.

1. ChickyTutor: our first choice for speaking practice

ChickyTutor gives you an AI conversation partner for Dutch practice. Choose Intermediate in the app and use a situation you expect to encounter: explaining a repair, discussing your weekend or giving an opinion at work. You can ask for feedback and try the sentence again while the topic is still fresh.

For intermediate Dutch, narrow the task to one difficulty. Practise keeping the verb in the right place after a time phrase, then add a reason with a subordinate clause. A small goal makes the feedback easier to use.

Try this request:

Practise Dutch with me. I need to reschedule an appointment and explain why. Ask one follow-up at a time. After my answer, help me improve one word-order mistake and let me try again.

The aim is a reply you can adapt when the other person asks a different question. Keep real conversations and teacher feedback in your routine too.

Dutch apps and vocabulary

  • Clozemaster offers sentence gap practice. After a round, use two troublesome words in a description of your own day.
  • Anki lets you build flashcards. Save a whole useful phrase rather than a noun without its article.

Dutch reading resources

De Volkskrant supplies authentic newspaper reading. Start with a short piece on a familiar topic; an opinion column may be a bigger step than a straightforward report. Access varies by article.

Readlang is a reading tool with click-to-translate support. Give yourself one uninterrupted paragraph before looking up words. Then write a sentence explaining what happened.

Dutch listening resources

The Dutch Online Academy has podcasts with transcripts and level choices. Listen once for the subject, check the text, then listen again for the words you missed. NPO offers a further step into Dutch broadcasting when learner audio feels comfortable; programme availability varies.

Dutch writing and speaking with people

Use MyLanguageExchange to look for a Dutch penpal or conversation partner. Suggest one short exchange about housing, food or work rather than an open-ended promise to practise sometime. Partners and replies depend on the community.

For focused live help, Preply is a tutor marketplace. Bring a short email you wrote and ask to practise the conversation that might follow it. Check the teacher's language, availability and terms.

Dutch grammar, dictionaries and books

DutchGrammar is a reference for questions that arise during practice. Use it to investigate one repeated error, then close the explanation and make three examples.

Woorden.org is a Dutch dictionary option from the source list. Try reading a Dutch explanation before reaching for an English translation.

Dutch: A Comprehensive Grammar by Bruce Donaldson is a detailed reference, rather than a daily conversation course. Look up a specific construction instead of starting at page one.

A weekly routine for intermediate Dutch

On Monday, choose an Academy podcast and collect three phrases. On Tuesday, use them to describe something that happened to you. On Thursday, read a short article and explain its main point aloud. At the weekend, repeat the appointment role-play with a new reason and a different time.

Keep one note: which sentence could you produce without checking? That is a more useful practice target than the number of tabs you opened.

Should I use only Dutch-language materials now?

Use Dutch when you can follow the meaning, and an English explanation when it resolves a specific obstacle. The next step is to return to Dutch and use the construction yourself.
