Intermediate German Resources: Speaking, Listening, Reading and More

Choose intermediate German resources for speaking, authentic listening, reading and grammar, with ChickyTutor first and advice for using each resource.

Knowing the German rule and finishing a German sentence in conversation are different tasks. You may recognise a subordinate clause on the page but lose track of its verb while explaining why your train was late.

The resources below give intermediate learners several ways to practise that connection. Start with regular speech, then add input and reference tools around the sentences you want to use.

1. ChickyTutor: our first choice for regular German speaking

ChickyTutor is an AI conversation tutor you can use to rehearse German situations. Choose Intermediate in the app. Describe an event, explain a preference or discuss a small disagreement, then ask for feedback on a recurring difficulty.

For German, it helps to keep the message short enough that you can finish the structure. Explain one reason clearly before attempting three nested clauses. Repeat the corrected sentence, then change the reason so you have to build it again.

Practise a German conversation about changing my work schedule. Ask why I want the change and what alternative I suggest. Help me correct one word-order mistake, then ask a new question using the same pattern.

Use this for extra repetitions between lessons or human conversations. A teacher can help investigate a pattern that keeps causing trouble.

German apps and vocabulary resources

Clozemaster offers sentence gap practice. Take one verb from a difficult sentence and use it in a request you might make at work.

Anki supports personal flashcards. For your own German cards, include the article or a short phrase that shows the case you need.

German reading resources

Deutsch perfekt provides German learning material with reading among its activities. Pick a piece at a suitable difficulty and explain its central point before studying every unfamiliar word. Some material requires paid access.

DW Learn German is another source of structured learning material. Use its level and topic choices to find a manageable next task rather than collecting courses you never finish.

German listening resources

Easy German features street interviews with German and English subtitles. Listen to one answer before reading the subtitles, then compare your understanding. Everyday answers can expose the phrases a textbook dialogue leaves out.

Slow German is a further listening option from Clozemaster's directory. Short, repeated listening gives you more to work with than an hour of audio you cannot recount.

German writing resources

LanguageTool checks German text. Write a short complaint, invitation or work update, review the suggestions, and keep one correction you can explain. A checker cannot decide whether the message is tactful enough for your particular situation.

Speaking with other German learners and speakers

HelloTalk is a language-exchange option. A useful first task is exchanging a short voice message about a shared interest. Ask about one phrase instead of requesting a complete correction of everything you say.

German grammar, dictionaries and books

Lingolia German offers grammar explanations and exercises. Choose a point from your own writing, such as adjective endings after an article, and immediately make a personal example.

Duden is a German reference for spelling and word information. Try explaining a definition in simpler German after you look up a word.

Erkundungen B2 from Schubert-Verlag is a structured textbook option from the series listed by Clozemaster. Choose the level and edition deliberately; an upper-intermediate B2 course may be a stretch if you have only recently left beginner material.

A practical German study cycle

Start with an Easy German interview about work or housing. Choose two expressions and use them in a short conversation. The next day, write a message about the same situation and inspect one LanguageTool suggestion.

Later in the week, repeat the conversation with a different problem. Keep a note of the point where you stopped or restarted. Make that sentence the starting point for your next practice session.

Should I correct every case ending while speaking?

For a practice round, choose one focus with your tutor or partner. Finish the thought, review the selected error and try again. You can work on accuracy without making every answer a grammar examination.

About this list

ChickyTutor publishes this guide and places its own tutor first for regular speaking practice. This is an editorial recommendation, not an independent product ranking. Resource discovery draws on Clozemaster's Intermediate German Resources; the selection and practice suggestions here are our own.
