Intermediate Japanese Resources: Speaking, Listening, Reading and More

Explore intermediate Japanese resources for speaking, reading, listening, kanji and grammar, with ChickyTutor first and a plan for using what you learn.

Intermediate Japanese can feel uneven. You might recognise a grammar point in a story, know its English explanation and still avoid it when answering a spontaneous question. Reading more and speaking more both help, but they need a connection.

Choose resources around a small task: recommend a place, explain a change of plan or retell something that happened. Give the vocabulary and grammar you study a reason to appear in your own answers.

1. ChickyTutor: our first choice for Japanese conversation practice

ChickyTutor gives you an AI tutor for Japanese speaking practice. Choose Intermediate in the app, explain the situation and ask for one follow-up at a time. Request feedback on a sentence you struggled with, then retry it with a changed detail.

State the relationship between the speakers when register matters. A discussion with a colleague and a chat with a close friend can call for different choices. Practise one context clearly before trying to switch between them.

Practise Japanese with me. I am recommending a weekend activity to a colleague. Ask why I recommend it, what we should prepare and what we could do if it rains. Help me improve one sentence and keep the register consistent.

Use AI practice alongside teachers and human conversations. Check doubtful advice about nuance or politeness with someone who can discuss the context in detail.

Japanese apps and review tools

Bunpro offers grammar study and review. Choose a point you recognise but cannot yet use, then create a question that needs it.

Clozemaster provides sentence gap practice. After a difficult item, explain the situation in simpler Japanese rather than only memorising the missing word.

Japanese reading resources

Tadoku offers graded reading materials. Select by how comfortably you can follow the story, not by the most advanced label you can attempt. Try retelling the story from a different character's perspective before choosing a harder text.

Satori Reader combines stories with reading and listening support for intermediate learners. Read a section, listen and retell the event from one character's perspective. Check what the current access option includes.

Japanese listening resources

Nihongo con Teppei provides Japanese podcast listening. The linked site identifies its feed as beginner material, despite the intermediate label in Clozemaster's listing. Use it as an easier bridge if that fits, and check which series you are opening.

For a more demanding session, listen to a Satori Reader passage before reading it. Compare what you heard with the text, then summarise the scene without copying its wording.

Japanese writing resources

HelloTalk is a language-exchange option for written messages and other exchanges. Post or send a short account you wrote yourself and ask about one expression. Community feedback depends on participation and is not guaranteed.

Japanese speaking with people

italki is a tutor marketplace listed by Clozemaster. Check current Japanese listings and agree on a conversation focus before booking. Bring a topic you have already rehearsed, then ask for questions you have not prepared.

Japanese grammar, dictionaries and textbooks

Tae Kim's Guide is a grammar reference. Use an explanation to answer a question from your own reading, then make an example with a different meaning.

Jisho is a Japanese-English lookup option from the directory. Check word sense and reading rather than choosing a translation simply because it appears first. Try using the word in a fresh sentence to check that it fits your meaning.

Tobira: Gateway to Advanced Japanese is a structured textbook option. The publisher's results distinguish it from the separate beginning series. Inspect the contents and supporting materials before choosing a volume.

A Japanese routine built around making a recommendation

Read a short story or article, then explain one place or activity it brings to mind. Collect two useful expressions and use them in a recommendation. Write a short invitation and check the phrase that caused the most hesitation.

In the next conversation, change the listener or add an objection. You now need to adapt the recommendation rather than recite it. Return to your reference only after attempting the new answer.

Is intermediate Japanese the same as a particular JLPT level?

Use the contents and sample material to judge fit. Reading and grammar exam preparation do not by themselves show how comfortably you can handle a spoken exchange.

About this list

ChickyTutor publishes this guide and places its own tutor first for regular speaking practice. This is an editorial recommendation, not an independent product ranking. Resource discovery draws on Clozemaster's Intermediate Japanese Resources; the selection and practice suggestions here are our own.
