Romanian Pronunciation Practice: A 10-Minute ChickyTutor Voice Drill

A Romanian pronunciation drill for ChickyTutor voice practice: ă and â/î vowels, ce/ci and ge/gi, rolled r, word stress, and repeatable correction loops.

Romanian Pronunciation Practice: A 10-Minute Voice Drill

Romanian spelling gives learners useful clues, but several high-value distinctions still need careful listening: ă versus â/î, the changing sounds of c and g, word stress, and the Romanian R used by your reference speaker.

The University of Bucharest student guide includes a short reference for the Romanian-specific letters and the ce/ci and ge/gi groups. Use native audio from a course or dictionary for the actual sound. English approximations are orientation tools, not pronunciation models.

Minute 1: Save a reference, not a rule

Choose one sentence recorded by a native Romanian speaker. Save the link and identify one target word. Listen twice without speaking, then once while looking at the text.

Do not begin with five unrelated sounds. One sentence is enough for a ten-minute session.

Minutes 2-3: Separate ă from â/î

Romanian ă and â/î represent different central vowels. The letters â and î represent the same vowel but follow different spelling conventions. Select two teacher-checked words for each sound.

Alternate the words slowly, then say them in the source sentence. Avoid replacing both vowels with the same unstressed English sound. If you cannot hear the difference yet, spend the session on listening and identification.

Minutes 4-5: Read c and g from their neighbors

Build four small groups from your course:

  • ce and ci;
  • ge and gi;
  • che and chi;
  • ghe and ghi.

Listen and label before speaking. Then insert one word from each relevant group into a short sentence. The point is to stop guessing from the first letter alone.

Minute 6: Check R without over-rolling every word

Use the R of your chosen native model. Start with a word where it is easy to hear, then place it between two familiar words in a phrase. Keep the rest of the phrase relaxed.

If the R remains difficult but the word is understood, ask a Romanian teacher which feature most affects clarity before making it the center of every session.

Minute 7: Mark stress on the useful word

Romanian stress is not always predictable from spelling. Copy the stress from native audio and mark the stressed syllable in your notes. Tap the word once, then say it inside the complete sentence without adding equal stress to every syllable.

Minutes 8-9: Use ChickyTutor for transfer

Open ChickyTutor for Romanian and paste:

Run a short Romanian voice exchange that makes me use this checked sentence pattern: [sentence]. My target is [ă versus â/î, c/g group, R, or word stress]. Let me finish. Give me one sentence-level pronunciation correction, make me repeat it, then change one detail.

ChickyTutor's job is to put the sound under speaking pressure. It should not be treated as an authoritative phonetic scorer.

Minute 10: Keep one before-and-after pair

Save the first recording and the final repeated sentence. Write one observation you can hear yourself. If the automatic feedback conflicts with native audio, keep the audio as the reference and take the question to a Romanian teacher or proficient speaker.

Repeat the same target for several days. A smaller contrast that survives in a sentence is more useful than a new list of isolated sounds every morning.
