If you have finished Pimsleur, the worst next step is to replace a daily speaking habit with endless research about what to study next.
Keep the habit. Change the task.

Run a four-part exit check
Use one familiar topic, such as making plans, and test four abilities.
1. Recall
Can you produce the useful phrases without hearing an English cue first?
2. Variation
Can you change the time, person, reason, or level of formality?
3. Response
Can you continue when the other speaker rejects your suggestion or asks why?
4. Recognition
Can you understand the same idea from a different voice using different wording?
The weakest result tells you what to add. Do not assume everyone finishing the same course has the same gap.
If recall is the problem
Keep a short retrieval routine. Choose five phrases from recent lessons and use each in a true sentence. The next day, retrieve them inside a different situation.
Avoid replaying the lesson before you try. The attempt is what reveals whether the phrase is available without the audio cue.
If variation is the problem
Take one exchange and change a single variable:
- morning becomes evening;
- one ticket becomes three;
- a friend becomes a manager;
- agreement becomes a polite refusal.
One-variable practice keeps the language manageable while breaking dependence on the original exchange.
If response is the problem

Add short listening from outside the course. Use a series with recurring speakers before jumping among random clips.

- write three words you caught;
- say the gist aloud;
- check a transcript or subtitles;
- answer the speaker in one sentence.

Add reading without losing speech
Choose material you can mostly follow: a graded reader, a short news item for learners, a recipe, or messages connected to daily life. Read one short section, close it, and explain it aloud.
If your language uses an unfamiliar writing system, begin with a structured introduction and accurate audio. Do not guess sound-symbol relationships from romanization alone.
A practical week after Pimsleur
- Monday: retrieve five old phrases without audio.
- Tuesday: listen to a short unfamiliar clip and answer it.
- Wednesday: read a short text and retell it.
- Thursday: run the ChickyTutor roleplay with one changed detail.
- Friday: repeat Thursday's corrected lines from memory.
- Weekend: use the language with a tutor, exchange partner, friend, or real service interaction when appropriate.
Ten useful minutes beat a complicated plan you avoid. Keep one record: the sentence that failed, the correction, and the later situation where you used it.
When to continue, review, or switch resources
Continue with another Pimsleur level if the format still helps and the next level exists for your language. Review selected lessons when a specific phrase group is weak. Add a different resource when the exit check exposes a lane Pimsleur is not currently filling for you, such as sustained reading, varied natural listening, or explicit grammar reference.
The decision should follow the gap, not a universal course ladder.
