IB Spanish Ab Initio Oral Practice That Sounds Spoken

A practical speaking-first guide for IB Spanish ab initio oral practice with image description, follow-ups, and flexible answer frames.

IB Spanish Ab Initio Oral Practice That Sounds Spoken

IB Spanish ab initio oral practice should not start with a perfect paragraph. It should start with a messy answer that is short, human, and fixable.

The IB says language ab initio is for beginners with little or no previous experience and is available at standard level. Check the official IB language acquisition page and your teacher's guidance for current assessment details. ChickyTutor is not affiliated with the International Baccalaureate.

The Problem: You Know Words, But Cannot Move

A first answer might be:

En la foto hay una familia. Están en un restaurante. Comen comida. Es bueno.

Not wrong, but stuck.

Stronger, still simple:

That answer does four jobs:

  1. describe what is visible
  2. make one reasonable guess
  3. link to a theme
  4. add a personal comparison

Attempt, Correction, Repeat, Twist

Prompt:

Describe a photo of teenagers eating lunch at school.

First answer: under 40 seconds, no notes.

Correction: fix one thing only: verb tense, connectors, or missing opinion.

Repeat the improved answer.

Twist:

Now one student looks excluded.

A trained answer adapts:

That is the point. You are not building one perfect answer. You are building a repairable answer.

A Spanish Oral Frame

Use this as training, not a script:

More natural version:

Scenarios Worth Practicing

  • a family meal where one person is on their phone
  • a student choosing between university and work
  • a tourist visiting a city but creating pollution
  • a young person shopping online
  • friends planning a trip with a small budget
  • a community cleaning a beach after a festival

Each gives you a visible detail, a theme, and a complication.

What To Fix First

Most students chase harder vocabulary. Usually they need better control of simple verbs.

Weak:

La gente es comida y feliz.

Corrected:

La gente está comiendo y parece feliz.

If you control present, past, near future, opinions, comparisons, and reasons, you can answer many oral questions clearly.
