Select was for a singular subject, waren for a plural subject, had for ik or a singular third person, and hadden for a plural subject in a closed set of background frames.

Let's break that down. First, Bram said: 'Gisteren was ik thuis,' meaning 'Yesterday I was at home.' Notice that we use 'was' for singular subjects like 'ik', 'hij', or 'het'.

So Lotte's line, 'Het was erg druk', also uses 'was' because 'het' is singular?

That's right! 'Het was erg druk' means 'It was very busy', using 'was' for the singular 'het'.
